It's dark in places, but often not as much as Rise. Shadow didn't really do that much to build on the new tone. It says a lot that they were almost completely written out of Shadow, I didn't miss them at all, & their cameo in the end accomplished nothing. It has serious pacing issues & the Flying Opera Company just aren't that interesting. But despite the shocking twists in the start & end, the midbook drags a lot. And it created so many amazing characters like Kelsang, Rangi, & this new version of Kyoshi.
It gave us The Tragedy of Avatar Kuruk the Twat. It created one of, if not the greatest villains in the franchise so far.
Rise brought a whole new tone to the Avatarverse. It's a hard choice because I feel like they each have their major successes & major failings.
